Here’s what you can expect from a normal tattooing procedure:
- The tattoo specialist should disinfect his hands by washing with germicidal soap.
- The area you want your tattoo on your body should be disinfected and clean.
- The tattoo specialist should wear on his hands clean new gloves, possibly even a surgical mask).
- The tattoo specialist should explain you the procedure needed for sterilization and open a new set of single-use items such as gloves, needles and so on.
- Using the tattoo gun, the tattoo specialist will draw an outline of the tattoo with a strong colored ink.
- Vaseline will be used before applying the ink to keep the ink from messing the skin.
- The outline will be cleaned with soap and water.
- About 4 needles will be installed on the tattoo gun, and the tattoo specialist can start filling the outline. Another cleaning of the area is necessary at this moment because, color will be added.
- When the tattoo is finished, the area will be cleaned once again instructions will be given for care.

I would love to get a tattoo, but I am so concerned that the facility would not be sterilizing properly. Am I being paranoid? Also do these guys ever make “mistakes”? Like a hand slipping or something?
Most tattoo parlours are of very high standards of cleanliness nowadays. Always make sure you see the tattoo artist open the needles in front of you from sealed packs, so you know they are brand new. A good rule is that if you feel the tattoo parlour looks unclean then don’t get your tattoo done at that establishment, there are many other quality tattoo artists to choose from.
Very helpful information. My girlfriend has several tattoos and is very selective when choosing a tattoo shop to do work on her. Good stuff.
